Aluminium sulphate solution is added to the raw or waste water, causing the surface characteristics of the suspended solids to be altered and causing the solids to attach to one another and precipitate (coagulation). Flocculation is the operation that causes the suspended solids to coalesce. Coagulation and flocculation can lead to the removal of suspended solids in excess of 80 percent.
